Product Description
In his popular workbook, An SPSS Companion to Political Analysis, Philip H. Pollock III gets students using actual political data and working with a software tool that prepares them for future political science courses. Now updated using SPSS 16.0, the new third edition is a no-nonsense and friendly introduction to using SPSS: students learn through a series of guided examples, reference 120 screenshots, and can count on step-by-step instructions to all procedures. As in previous editions, the workbook covers the full array of data analysis procedures from introductory to advanced, including descriptive statistics and data transformations, to dummy variables and interaction effects. A final chapter shows students how to code data and how to read it into SPSS. With 50% more exercises than in the previous edition, students not only interact with a range of substantive political science questions, but encounter more exercises on comparative and international politics, investigating such topics as the relative importance of cultural and institutional factors in shaping political parties or the extent to which wealth is equally distributed within countries. The third edition also delves deeper into the use of graphic display to complement empirical results. Students learn state of the art editing techniques using SPSS Chart Editor, while following protocols described by leading experts in the graphic display of quantitative information. In addition to creating simple bar charts and line graphs, students will learn to produce scatterplots and logistic regression curves.

SPSS Companion November 25, 2007 Jaenelle (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent walk-through of how to use all the basic features of SPSS, with good explanations about what the outputs mean. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a beginning and basic knowledge of how to use SPSS.
Excellent introduction to quantitative analysis July 9, 2008 PoliSci 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book takes us step by step through many useful guided examples and makes sure to stop and briefly explain concepts along the way. The topics and instructions are helpful for getting comfortable using SPSS (and many of the most commonly employed statistical tests are included in the chapters). By the end of this book, you feel confident enough to strike out and perform your own quantitative analyses. The conversational tone makes it much easier to grasp the concepts. SPSS is a good introduction to quantitative analysis, and this companion is an excellent introduction to SPSS.
Great book, easy to follow October 8, 2008 P. Headley (Harrisburg, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great textbook! Very easy to follow. Information is given in just the right quantity, not too repetitive to the point where it gets boring, but repetitive enough to help you remember. I have to admit that I enjoy the exercises in this book so much that I've actually worked ahead a few weeks in my data analysis class. Exercises are also very interesting and explore neat relationships.
good introduction to scholary research June 26, 2007 Sleazy P. (USA) this is a good book for those who want to understand what it takes to write a good scholary work. the underpinings of statistics and how they are used. the only weakness is that there are times when even the most advanced student needs an teacher, why i give a four in stead of five stars. but it is still a wonderful resourced for all.
SPSS Companion to Political Anslysis July 25, 2009 Spencer (Virginia) This is a lab book, so don't buy it unless it has the CD, or if it's been written in. Now that I'm half way through the class, I can say it is helpful. The companion book does not have to go with the text book. PROFESSORS - DON'T MAKE US BUY TWO TEXT BOOKS, JUST TO USE THIS LAB BOOK. If you like a different text book better than Pollock's recommend it only. Thanks! (A former college bookstore manager who has decided it is time to get a Master's degree.)
